17-Year-Old Miles Russell Secures U.S. Open Spot with Tiger Woods' Son as Caddie
Miles Russell, a talented 17-year-old golfer, successfully clinched a place in the U.S. Open on Monday, marking a significant achievement in his young career. He was one of two teenagers to earn a coveted spot during the Florida qualifier, and speculation remains about whether he will have the son of golf legend Tiger Woods, Charlie Woods, as his caddie at Shinnecock Hills next week.
Ranked as the No. 10 amateur in the world, Russell overcame a bogey on the initial playoff hole to secure the fourth and final qualifying position. "It kept it so light," he expressed about having Woods, a close friend and fellow Florida State attendee, on his bag. "It's the first time I've had a buddy on the bag. I really like it, not talking much golf, just having a good time.” When asked if Charlie would accompany him to the U.S. Open, Russell simply replied, “We'll see what he's doing. To be determined.”
The top qualifier from Florida was Giuseppe Puebla, who sits just behind Russell in the American Junior Golf Association rankings. Together, they were part of a competitive field of 715 golfers from various locations, all vying for one of the 43 available spots in the 126th U.S. Open. Other qualifying events took place in regions such as England, Japan, and Dallas.
In Ohio, Vaughn Harber, a recent Ohio State sophomore, showcased an impressive performance, finishing his last five holes at The Lakes in 5-under par to advance through a playoff. Additionally, Jackson Van Paris qualified without needing extra holes after birdieing his final two holes. Notably, the Ohio qualifiers also marked the U.S. Open debut of Arni Sveinsson, the first player from Iceland to qualify for the prestigious tournament.
While Billy Horschel found a silver lining in a challenging season by qualifying in Ohio, Tony Finau will miss the U.S. Open for the first time since 2017, falling short by just two shots. As the tournament approaches, anticipation builds for the young talents and seasoned players alike as they prepare for one of golf's most esteemed competitions.
