Adrian Peterson opens up about leaving the Vikings in 2017

It was reported last week that former Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson would be inducted into the team's Ring of Honor this season. The former Oklahoma Sooner is among the best players to ever wear a Vikings uniform and is a future Hall of Famer, and yet, when he left the team in 2017, it was seemingly a shock to many.

Speaking on the Ed Block Foundation Podcast, Peterson explained what led him to leave the team following the 2017 season. He hints that it was related to his relationship with Mike Zimmer, who was the head coach at the time for the franchise.

Peterson explains, “When I was leaving there, I just felt disrespected by the head coach. Not the organization or anything like that, just the head coach. Me and him kinda had had a few words respectfully, I was just like ‘alright it was probably best for me to do something different.’”

After leaving the Vikings, Peterson would rush for 3,171 yards with six other teams. In the mix, he had one more 1,000+ yard season with Washington in 2018, while the Vikings would transition to the Dalvin Cook era. Meanwhile, Mike Zimmer would remain head coach until 2021, when he was fired and replaced by Kevin O'Connell.
