Alabama Defeats Nebraska 5-1, Ending Their Winning Streak at WCWS

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — In a commanding performance, Marlie Giles powered Alabama to a 5-1 victory over Nebraska, driving in four runs and hitting a home run. Jocelyn Briski showcased her pitching prowess by only allowing one hit throughout the game, leading the top-seeded Crimson Tide to a victory that halted Nebraska's impressive 27-game winning streak on Saturday at the Women's College World Series.

Briski, who holds the title of SEC Pitcher of the Year, achieved six strikeouts without issuing a single walk during the match. Notably, this marked Alabama's fourth one-hitter in just seven games throughout the NCAA Tournament this year. With this win, Alabama improved its record to 2-0 in the series and advanced to the national semifinals.

The Crimson Tide, now boasting a 56-7 overall record, will face either UCLA or Texas Tech on Monday, with a chance to move on to the championship series. Meanwhile, the fourth-seeded Nebraska team, which currently has a record of 52-7, will compete against Texas in an elimination game on Sunday.

Giles set the tone early, hitting a home run off Nebraska's pitcher Jordy Frahm with two outs in the first inning, giving Alabama a 3-0 advantage. She later added a sacrifice fly in the third inning that brought the score to 4-0. Briski maintained control of the game, retiring the first 11 batters until Hannah Camenzind managed to hit a home run in the fourth inning.

Alabama's Jena Young contributed to the scoreline with an RBI single in the fourth, extending her streak of consecutive on-base appearances to seven in the World Series. On the other hand, Frahm, who is a two-time NFCA National Player of the Year, allowed three runs and three hits in just two innings of work.

Alabama has made 16 appearances in the Women's College World Series this century and clinched its sole championship in 2012, while Nebraska is still in pursuit of its first national title after ten WCWS appearances.
