Analyst Predicts Bright Future for 49ers Rookie Running Back Kaelon Black

The San Francisco 49ers are intensifying their offseason preparations, particularly as they assess the competition for the backup role behind star running back Christian McCaffrey. Among the newcomers making a notable impression is third-round draft pick Kaelon Black, who has caught the attention of prominent NFL analyst Greg Cosell.

Cosell, known for his in-depth evaluations, expressed strong support for Black during a recent episode of the Ross Tucker Football Podcast. "I really liked his tape a lot," he remarked. "I think that he fits the way the 49ers play offense. He's tough, he's physical, he's got some juice to him, he gets hard yards. It would not surprise me if he earns the job as the backup to McCaffrey."

Black is currently in a competitive race for the second running back spot, facing off against 2025 fifth-round pick Jordan James and veteran Patrick Taylor. The rookie brings a wealth of experience from his six-year college career at both James Madison and Indiana, where he showcased his skills by playing in all 29 games during his final two years. In 2025, he amassed 1,039 rushing yards and scored 10 touchdowns, highlighting his capability to handle a significant workload.

His dedication and performance have not gone unnoticed by his teammates. George Kittle recently commended Black's work ethic and maturity, suggesting that he embodies the values of the 49ers’ culture. Black himself is eager to redefine the team's narrative regarding their draft history with running backs, stating, “I don’t want to get grouped with anybody in the past. I’m really just in my own lane, it’s how I’ve been my whole life,” according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

As the 49ers continue their training camp, Black’s blend of toughness and vision positions him as a player to keep an eye on. Should he maintain his impressive performance, it’s possible that he could secure a vital role behind McCaffrey this coming season.
