Andy Roddick Critiques Flavio Cobolli's Press Conference After Matteo Arnaldi's Withdrawal
During a recent press conference following a Mixed-Doubles Exhibition Match held at the Breakers in Palm Beach, Andy Roddick voiced his concerns regarding the circumstances surrounding Flavio Cobolli’s advancement to the final of the 2026 French Open. Cobolli's journey to the final was marked by the withdrawal of his fellow Italian, Matteo Arnaldi, who had to pull out just before their highly anticipated semifinal due to health issues.
After Arnaldi announced his withdrawal due to severe stomach problems, he appeared in the press room to speak with reporters, accompanied by Cobolli. Roddick observed the situation closely and found it troubling that the two were sharing the same space, even though they were seated several feet apart.
In a candid remark, Arnaldi described his condition, explaining, "I think it’s a virus because I was feeling pretty cold. I think I had a fever during the day. I just know that I can’t move, and I can’t eat, and I can’t drink. There was really no way that I would be able to play."
Roddick, reflecting on the situation, stated, “They were a little too close during the press conference, by the way. I mean, they weren’t close. They were 10 or 12 feet apart.” He emphasized that if he were in Cobolli's position, he would have opted to avoid any contact with Arnaldi, saying, “I would be a psychopath. I would be like, ‘Brother, I love you. ... Don’t be in the same room as me.’”
Despite his critique, Roddick expressed sympathy for Arnaldi, hoping that this unfortunate event wouldn’t hinder his future opportunities in the sport. As Cobolli prepares for his first Grand Slam final against Alexander Zverev, the tennis community awaits the outcome of this pivotal match.
