Angel Reese Receives Technical Foul in Dream's Defeat to Liberty

In a competitive matchup on Thursday, Atlanta Dream forward Angel Reese found herself at the center of controversy during her team's loss to the New York Liberty. The incident occurred with 8:54 left in the fourth quarter as Reese attempted a layup, colliding with Liberty guard Pauline Astier, who fell to the ground after the contact.

Initially awarded an and-1 opportunity, the play was subsequently challenged by New York and reversed, resulting in an offensive foul against Reese—marking her fourth foul of the night. In addition to this, she was assessed a technical foul, although the specific reason for the technical was not immediately clear. Notably, after making the basket, Reese gestured in a "too small" manner toward Astier, which may have contributed to the call.

At the time of the incident, the Liberty led the game 81-69, and Reese's potential points could have narrowed the gap to just eight. The Liberty had commanded an 18-point lead at one stage, while Atlanta struggled to maintain a lead of more than six points.

Despite the team's overall performance, Reese stood out with a remarkable effort, scoring a game-high 25 points on 50% shooting, along with nine rebounds, three assists, two steals, and one blocked shot. The Dream's loss marked a disappointing 104-90 defeat, bringing their season record to 8-4. This game also marked the first occasion during head coach Karl Smesko's tenure where an opposing team scored over 100 points against Atlanta.
