Another UofL women's basketball home rally falls short vs. Notre Dame
Louisville women’s basketball found itself trying to play catchup again.
The 11th-ranked Cardinals have made a habit of getting down by double digits at several points in games this season. Ironically, they've been able to overcome the deficits on the road but not so much at home.
After falling short of a comeback win over Virginia a week ago, UofL (25-6, 15-3 ACC) missed out on a share of the regular season ACC title and a sweep of Notre Dame via the 65-62 loss Sunday at the KFC Yum! Center.
Louisville beat the Fighting Irish, 79-66, at home on Jan. 15, and Notre Dame returned the favor less than two months later, spoiling Senior Day for guard Reyna Scott and forward Laura Ziegler.
A bad second quarter put Louisville at an early double-digit deficit. Notre Dame outscored Louisville, 29-12, in the final 10 minutes before the half. The Cardinals also had 12 first-half turnovers, which prevented them from capitalizing on holding Notre Dame to only three made field goals in the first quarter.
The Cardinals, once again, had to dig deep to give themselves a chance to win. A 36-24 halftime deficit had faded by the fourth quarter, which featured three ties and two lead changes. But Louisville couldn't get out of its own way and turned the ball over twice in the last 14 seconds to take the regular season-ending loss.
Louisville will now turn its attention to the postseason where it’ll await its quarterfinals opponent in the ACC Tournament. The game is set for 5 p.m. Thursday at Gas South Arena in Duluth, Georgia.
