Antonio Johnson's Versatility Shines in Jaguars' Defense
In the 2025 season, Antonio Johnson, safety for the Jacksonville Jaguars, emerged as a key player on the team's defense. Throughout the year, his responsibilities within the squad increased significantly, showcasing his talent as both a run defender and pass coverage specialist. Pro Football Focus (PFF) highlighted his impressive performance, noting that he allowed fewer than 10 yards per reception, recorded five interceptions, and made three pass breakups.
Johnson's ability to adapt to various roles has been essential to his success. Defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile praised Johnson's versatility, saying, “Cool thing about him is he's had a lot on his plate... Antonio plays both safety positions, nickel, dime, he does a lot." Campanile emphasized that while learning such a diverse set of roles can be challenging, it has allowed Johnson to develop a comprehensive understanding of the defense, elevating his capability to instruct teammates on the necessary techniques.
Last season, Johnson logged impressive snap counts across multiple positions: 206 in the box, 306 at deep safety, 98 in the slot, and 29 along the defensive line. Now entering his fourth year in the NFL, he stands out as one of the more experienced players in a relatively young Jaguars safety group, which has opened up avenues for him to take on a leadership role.
Campanile noted the change in Johnson's approach this year, stating, “Definitely a little bit different for him coming in this year... You see him helping the young guys, helping Jalen (Huskey) and other guys in the room." With his extensive knowledge of the defensive system, Johnson is poised to step into a full-time starting position for the Jaguars this season, further solidifying his impact on the team.
