Arizona Men's Golf Falls Short Against UCLA in NCAA Semifinals
Arizona's men's golf team came tantalizingly close to a national championship but ultimately lost to UCLA in the semifinals of the NCAA tournament on Tuesday at Omni La Costa Resort in Carlsbad, California. This year's postseason marked the Wildcats' most successful run in nearly two decades, as they had not reached the semifinals since finishing third in 2004.
This season was particularly notable for Arizona, as it marked the first time the program advanced to match play since the format's introduction by the NCAA in 2009. “We were ready for that against UCLA and our team showed a bunch of fight,” said head coach Jim Anderson. “Of course we are disappointed we didn’t come out on the right side of the match, but I’m so proud of our guys and the year we were able to enjoy together. We are sad to see our seniors go, but there are so many memories that we all made together and that’s what we will remember.”
In the semifinal match, senior Filip Jakubcik secured Arizona's only point with a decisive victory of 3&2. Senior Zach Pollo was locked in a tie through 17 holes when UCLA clinched the overall match. Taishi Moto had a chance to extend his match but missed a birdie putt on the 18th hole, sealing Arizona's fate.
Earlier in the day, Arizona's journey to the semifinals was propelled by Pollo's remarkable play against Vanderbilt. Tied at 2-2, Pollo faced Wells Williams in a pivotal match. After trailing at times, Pollo seized the opportunity to force extra holes following a series of mistakes from Williams. In the first playoff hole, both players made par, but Pollo’s strong approach shot on the second extra hole allowed him to secure the victory, marking Arizona's first win in match play history. “I couldn’t picture a better person to be in that spot than Zach Pollo,” Anderson remarked, praising his execution under pressure.
Arizona's other victories in the quarterfinals came from Moto (4&3) and Tianyi Xiong (3&2). With underclassmen Moto, Xiong, and William Wistrand returning for another season, the Wildcats appear poised for continued success in the coming years.
