Armagh's Turbitt Reflects on All-Ireland Warning After Strong Start

Conor Turbitt has emphasized the importance of last week's results as a significant alert for the Armagh squad, noting how the outcomes affected both provincial champions in the opening round of the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship. After claiming their first Ulster title in 18 years just two weeks prior, Armagh secured a solid 1-18 to 1-13 victory against Derry at the Athletic Grounds.

Recent first-round matches saw both Munster champions Kerry and Connacht victors Roscommon suffer losses, with Kerry falling to Donegal and Roscommon succumbing to Tyrone. "It was a good warning for us. Those teams, they do have four weeks just to prepare for a team that's coming through, so they maybe do have an advantage that way, but we sort of felt like we'd come out the right side," Turbitt told BBC Sport NI.

Despite finally breaking their streak of three consecutive provincial final defeats, Turbitt stated that the team quickly shifted their focus to the next challenge against Derry. "You just have to really reset and refocus and go again," he explained. "As we said, Derry were waiting in the wings for us and we knew that. It is a case of just resetting and thankfully we had that momentum that carried us into today."

With the victory in the opening round, Armagh has positioned themselves well for a chance to advance further in the All-Ireland championship. Winning the next match would not only secure a place in the quarter-finals but also offer a much-needed break week. "You also have that carrot dangling that if you win your next game, that's you straight through back to Croke Park into the last eight. That's the goal now," Turbitt affirmed, looking ahead to the upcoming match.
