Aspiration Co-Founder Receives 14-Year Prison Sentence for Wire Fraud Linked to NBA Investigation
Joseph Sanberg, co-founder of the now-defunct green banking platform Aspiration, was sentenced to 14 years in federal prison on Monday after pleading guilty to two counts of wire fraud, as reported by ESPN’s Baxter Holmes. His company has come under scrutiny in connection with an NBA investigation involving the Los Angeles Clippers and their agreements with star player Kawhi Leonard, a story initially highlighted by journalist Pablo Torre, who later won a Pulitzer Prize for his coverage.
Prosecutors revealed that Sanberg defrauded investors and lenders out of approximately $248 million through various fraudulent activities, including securing loans by falsifying bank statements. While the prosecution sought a nearly 18-year prison sentence, Sanberg’s defense argued for leniency, claiming he acted without malice or greed. However, Judge Stephen V. Wilson condemned Sanberg’s actions, stating they represented "among the worst" cases he had encountered, leading to the 14-year sentence.
In a statement to the court, Sanberg expressed remorse, stating, “I accept that I lost my moral compass and wrongly stepped over the line, and I’m very sorry. I broke the law … I'm sorry. I’m so sorry.”
Aspiration was established in 2013 with a focus on environmentally friendly banking solutions. The company entered a significant $300 million endorsement agreement with the Clippers in 2021, followed by a $28 million deal with Leonard in 2022. Allegations arose when Torre suggested that the Clippers used Aspiration to sidestep the NBA's salary cap in order to offer Leonard a more lucrative contract. Despite his ties to the company, Clippers owner Steve Ballmer maintained he was unaware of the specifics of the endorsement deal.
In April, Ballmer penned a letter to the judge detailing how he believed he was defrauded by Sanberg and Aspiration, stating he was a “clear and undisputed victim” due to his commitment to integrity and sustainability. Although Ballmer has acknowledged connecting Aspiration with Leonard, he asserted ignorance regarding the endorsement agreement. Meanwhile, the NBA's investigation into the relationship between Ballmer and Aspiration is ongoing, with Commissioner Adam Silver indicating the inquiry is “enormously complex.”
