Atletico Madrid Prioritizes PSG Over Barcelona for Alvarez Transfer
Atletico Madrid is reportedly intent on transferring Julian Alvarez exclusively to Paris Saint-Germain, sidelining FC Barcelona, as indicated by SPORT, which referenced anonymous sources. All discussions regarding the potential departure of the Argentine striker from the Metropolitano Stadium are currently paused, awaiting the conclusion of his participation in the World Cup with Argentina.
Alvarez has emerged as Barcelona's primary target to succeed Robert Lewandowski, who is expected to depart when his contract expires on June 30. Reports from Argentina suggest that the player has reached a five-year agreement with the Catalan club. Barcelona made a significant bid of $116 million for Alvarez on the same day they announced the signing of Anthony Gordon, although it is believed this offer will need to be substantially increased to persuade Atletico Madrid.
Atletico Madrid's president, Enrique Cerezo, recently emphasized their commitment to Alvarez, stating, “Julian Alvarez is an Atletico Madrid player, not just for this past season, but for many others.” Despite Alvarez's desire to join Barcelona, Atletico appears determined to transfer him to PSG, with both clubs reportedly aligned on the matter. Formal negotiations are expected to commence after PSG's upcoming match against Arsenal in Budapest.
The primary challenge for Atletico lies in their asking price of $175 million (€150 million), a sum that is manageable for PSG but poses a challenge for Barcelona, especially as they navigate financial regulations. While PSG considers this valuation steep, they might explore ways to lower it by including a player in the deal.
Ultimately, the decision rests with Alvarez, who may need to take a stand to facilitate his move to Barcelona by opting not to engage with PSG in negotiations.
