Augie Lopez Leads USC Baseball to Super Regionals for First Time in Over Two Decades
In a thrilling display of power, Augie Lopez propelled USC baseball into the NCAA super regionals for the first time in 21 years, delivering a decisive three-run home run against Texas A&M late Monday night. As Lopez rounded the bases at Blue Bell Park, the small group of Trojans supporters erupted in cheers, momentarily overpowering the noise of the Aggies' famed 12th Man.
The Trojans secured a commanding 7-1 victory over Texas A&M, with Lopez’s homer silencing much of the sellout crowd of 7,042. USC fans could be heard chanting “Augie! Augie! Augie!” as he returned to the dugout, highlighting his pivotal role in the game. Following the match, Lopez was recognized as the most outstanding player of the regional.
USC's offense, which had previously shown impressive performance by scoring 48 runs in three back-to-back outings, finally came alive in this critical matchup. Until Lopez's pivotal swing, Texas A&M’s pitcher Clayton Freshcorn had kept the Trojans at bay.
USC's right-hander Grant Govel began strong, retiring the first seven batters he faced. However, the Aggies managed to tie the game at 1-1 in the fifth inning, thanks to a single from Abbrie Covarrubias. Shortly after, Lopez struck again, hitting a single to right-center to put USC back in the lead before his game-changing home run two innings later sealed the victory.
With this win, USC (47-16) is set to face North Carolina in the Chapel Hill Super Regional. This marks a significant achievement for the Trojans, who have not advanced this far in the NCAA tournament since 2002.
