Bagpipes Slip Past Security at Boston Stadium During World Cup
Strict regulations are in place for the 2026 FIFA World Cup at Boston Stadium, where attendees face limitations on what they can bring to the games. Under FIFA’s guidelines, items such as refillable water bottles and non-transparent bags are prohibited. The official FIFA website emphasizes, “All FIFA stadiums follow a clear bag policy to maintain a safe and efficient entry process. Ticket Holders are only permitted to bring certain types of bags into Stadiums.” Only bags made from clear plastic, vinyl, or PVC are allowed.
Despite these rules, a curious exception was noted during the Scotland versus Haiti match, as videos surfaced showing fans playing bagpipes inside the stadium. The presence of the musical instrument raised eyebrows, particularly since bagpipes do not conform to the approved bag policy.
The dilemma revolves around how these bagpipes made it past FIFA’s stringent security measures. Although some might argue that bagpipes are instruments rather than bags, the regulations explicitly state that any musical instruments larger than 12cm x 12cm x 12cm (4.7 inches x 4.7 inches x 4.7 inches) are not allowed unless they receive prior approval from event organizers. “Ticket Holders may bring musical instruments larger than the indicated size subject to preapproval of the Event Organisers and security screening,” the FIFA website details.
While the joy brought by the bagpiper added to the festive atmosphere, it remains unclear if this individual underwent additional screening or received special permission. Other fans were also seen with large instruments, like drums, as highlighted in a video shared on Gillette Stadium's Instagram account.
This incident showcases the complexities of enforcing security measures while accommodating the spirited nature of international sporting events.
