Baker Mayfield Urges Buccaneers to Finalize Contract Talks Before Training Camp

Baker Mayfield has strongly expressed his desire for a resolution regarding his contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers ahead of the upcoming training camp. In his first public comments of the offseason, the seasoned quarterback admitted that negotiations haven't advanced as he had anticipated. "It's not anywhere close to what we were thinking," Mayfield stated, emphasizing the urgency by declaring, "It's time to get something done long-term." He also set a clear expectation by stating that he prefers to halt discussions once training camp begins.

Mayfield is in the final year of a three-year, $100 million contract he signed with Tampa Bay back in 2024, which has an average annual value of $33.3 million. This figure ranks him as the 16th highest-paid quarterback in the NFL, and notably, he is among the lowest earners in the league for quarterbacks not on rookie contracts or serving as temporary replacements.

The context of these negotiations is critical, given Mayfield's impressive performance since joining the Buccaneers. He had a standout 2024 season, completing 407 of his 540 attempts (71.4%) for 4,500 yards, 41 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions, earning a Pro Bowl nod in the process. His follow-up season in 2025 was also strong, with 3,693 passing yards, 26 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions over 17 starts, along with 382 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown. In total, Mayfield has amassed 8,193 passing yards and 67 touchdowns over the last two seasons, playing a key role in the Buccaneers' back-to-back NFC South championships and playoff appearances.

Mayfield's achievements have significantly altered the narrative surrounding both his career and the Buccaneers' trajectory. Since stepping in as the starter after Tom Brady's retirement, he has brought much-needed stability to the quarterback position and has led the team to ongoing success. His statistics over the past two years stand up well against those of quarterbacks earning substantially higher salaries.

Despite the current impasse in contract discussions, Mayfield reiterated his commitment to the Buccaneers, highlighting that his family has settled in the region. However, he stressed that if a new deal is not finalized before training camp, his concentration will shift entirely to his on-field responsibilities. The Buccaneers view extending Mayfield as a priority, and with quarterback salaries on the rise, the coming weeks will be crucial in determining if Tampa Bay can secure its franchise quarterback for the foreseeable future.
