Baltimore Orioles See Renewed Hope in AL East Playoff Chase

As of May 21, the Baltimore Orioles were struggling significantly, sitting at 21-29 and trailing by over ten games in the American League East. However, a noticeable transformation has taken place since then, as the team has turned things around, now competing for Wild Card positioning with a record of 31-35 and climbing to third place in the division.

The Orioles have been rejuvenated by the performance of key players, particularly first baseman Pete Alonso, who was signed to a hefty five-year, $155 million contract. Known for his slow start, Alonso's initial months in Baltimore raised concerns among fans, as he recorded a mere .198 batting average with only four home runs in March and April. Recently, though, he has found his rhythm, hitting .310 with four home runs and 12 RBIs in his last 15 games, showcasing a significant improvement in both his average and power.

Alonso’s resurgence has been complemented by promising contributions from catching prospect Samuel Basallo, who had a stellar May with a .338 average and four home runs, though he has struggled in June. Meanwhile, Adley Rutschman has returned to form, performing at an All-Star level with an OPS of .839. The only notable struggle in the lineup is outfielder Tyler O’Neill, whose performance has lagged behind with a .158 average.

Looking ahead, several prospects in the Orioles' farm system could soon make their Major League debuts, especially if the team remains in contention for a postseason spot. Outfield prospect Enrique Bradfield Jr., currently recovering from a hand injury, has showcased his speed with 10 stolen bases in 23 games and could add a much-needed dimension to the team’s baserunning. Additionally, Creed Willems, a dual-position player, is having a standout season at Triple-A and might provide another power option if called up.

With the revamped roster, the Orioles could potentially enter a competitive race for the top of the AL East alongside the New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays. However, the team's pitching remains a concern, particularly within the starting rotation. As the trade deadline approaches, attention will be on whether the Orioles will seek to enhance their pitching staff to bolster their postseason aspirations.
