Benfica Appoints Marco Silva as New Head Coach Following Mourinho's Departure
Benfica has officially announced Marco Silva as their new head coach, signing him to a two-year contract that includes an option for an additional year. Silva, 48, takes over the role previously held by José Mourinho, whose exit was revealed earlier on Tuesday as Real Madrid expressed interest in bringing him back for a second term at the Santiago Bernabéu.
Mourinho, who had two successful seasons with the Spanish club from 2010 to 2013, is set to return following the re-election of Florentino Pérez as president. In a quick response to Mourinho's departure, Benfica secured Silva's appointment, ending his five-year managerial tenure at Fulham.
Despite Fulham's efforts to retain him, including a new contract offer, Silva chose to re-enter Portuguese football after spending a decade in the English leagues. His time in England saw him manage teams such as Hull City, Watford, and Everton, and he notably guided Fulham back to the Premier League by winning the Championship in the 2021/22 season, later establishing the club as a stable mid-table competitor.
Now, Silva faces a significant challenge at Benfica, who finished third in the Primeira Liga last season while remaining unbeaten. The team ended up eight points behind champions Porto and two points behind rivals Sporting CP. Silva's mission will be to restore Benfica to their former glory atop Portuguese football.
