Bengals' Chase and Higgins Focused on Championships Rather Than Personal Achievements
On June 4, Ja'Marr Chase, the talented wide receiver for the Cincinnati Bengals, revealed that he has no intention of setting personal benchmarks for the upcoming season. Instead, his sole aim is to return to the Super Bowl and secure a championship victory. His fellow receiver, Tee Higgins, echoed this sentiment, stating that they have already achieved individual success and are now solely focused on winning as a team.
With the entire offensive lineup back for this season and significant improvements made to the defense, both Chase and Higgins believe the Bengals are primed for a championship run. They expressed frustration over the disparity between the team's talent and their past results. “I feel like we've done everything we need to do personal accolades-wise, but we've got to win a championship,” said Higgins, emphasizing the importance of team success over individual honors.
During a media session on June 2, Chase reinforced his teammate's thoughts, stating, “It's not stats, there's nothing I can think about that I say I want to go into this year and do.” He pointed out that reaching the AFC Championship game is a critical goal for the squad. The Bengals recently commenced the third phase of their offseason workout program, where they are laying the foundation for success.
Chase has already made a significant impact in the league, being a Triple Crown winner and a Pro Bowl selection in each of his first five seasons. Higgins achieved his personal goal of maintaining good health last year, participating in 15 games, while quarterback Joe Burrow, a two-time NFL Comeback Player of the Year, remains on the lookout for an MVP title.
To address defensive shortcomings, the Bengals made a notable move by trading for Dexter Lawrence, a former Clemson teammate of Higgins. “Obviously we want to win 'ships, but definitely that was a big move, and happy we made it,” Higgins remarked. The team acknowledges the need for a more robust defense, especially to enhance their pass rush.
While Chase is optimistic, he also emphasized the necessity of proving themselves on the field: “We can't even talk about that, look at it, or compare,” referring to the previous Super Bowl team. The current roster, he noted, is markedly different. Injuries, particularly Burrow's turf toe last season, impacted performance, but with the return of both Flacco and a revamped defense, the Bengals are looking to turn the tide.
Higgins has committed to his health regimen, having adjusted his recovery and training routines to maximize his game participation. “I gotta stay healthy and do what I can to, you know, help my team get Ws,” he stated. The team seems united this offseason, with all players, including those seeking contract extensions, participating in Organized Team Activities. “We all want the same thing at the end of the day,” Higgins concluded, highlighting the collective drive within the locker room.
