Bengals Slot Cornerback Position Offers Depth and Competition
CINCINNATI — The Bengals' front office and coaching staff have shown confidence in their slot cornerback options, similar to their approach at linebacker, as they enter the upcoming season. While the team has added a few new players to bolster depth, Jalen Davis appears poised to retain his role as the primary nickel cornerback.
Defensive coordinator Al Golden praised Davis, stating, "He's a great communicator. He's really bright. He's experienced. He's got a passion for the game." Golden highlighted Davis's impact on the team, noting that his performance allowed Dax Hill to transition back to the outside, enhancing the overall effectiveness of the defense. Golden commended Davis for his readiness when called upon, saying, "He didn't pout when it wasn't his time... but when we called on him, man was he ready."
Davis has been with the Bengals since 2020, primarily spending time on the practice squad until a pivotal 2025 season where he stepped up following injuries to other players. His consistent performance during organized team activities this spring has further solidified his position with the first-team defense. "It shows that they have faith in me," Davis remarked. "It's up to me to do what I can do."
While Davis currently leads the position, the Bengals may explore a committee approach in the slot, especially given the increasing use of multi-tight end sets across the league. New free agent acquisition Kyle Dugger, known for his versatility, could become a key player in such matchups. Golden expressed admiration for Dugger's physical style and ability to disrupt plays, saying, "I'm really impressed with Kyle."
The team also signed Ja'Sir Taylor, a former sixth-round pick from the Chargers, who adds competition for the roster spot. Despite a mixed performance history, Taylor has more experience than Davis. Additionally, Josh Newton remains a contender as he heads into training camp, looking to establish himself in the slot position. With his increased experience, Davis aims to continue showcasing his skills as a playmaker, declaring, "I'm a playmaker. I'll go out there and make plays for us."
