Blue Jays Spoil Braves' Sweep Bid with Strong Finish

The Atlanta Braves showcased their ability to win series but fell short of a sweep against the Toronto Blue Jays, losing 7-2 in the final game of their three-game series at Truist Park. Despite clinching their 17th series triumph of the season with earlier victories, the Braves struggled offensively, marking only their second series sweep since early May.

The game’s outcome was not entirely reflective of its competitiveness. The Blue Jays pulled away with a significant four-run ninth inning, all scored with two outs, turning what was a close contest into a more lopsided result. Toronto finished with a season-high 16 hits, with each of their top eight batters contributing at least one hit and a solid 7-for-18 performance with runners in scoring position.

In contrast, Atlanta's offense was stifled, managing just four hits and going 1-for-5 with runners in scoring situations. The Braves started Chris Sale on the mound, while the Blue Jays opted for reliever Mason Fluharty, who handed the ball over to Chad Dallas, making his major league debut after being promoted from Triple-A Buffalo. Dallas effectively limited the Braves, yielding only one run over 3 2/3 innings.

The Blue Jays' scoring surged during a three-run third inning, beginning with a double from Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and followed by key singles and a two-run single from Myles Straw. Sale allowed 10 hits during his 5 2/3 innings, the highest he had given up this season, resulting in three earned runs—his most since an outing against the Angels in early April.

Atlanta briefly responded in the third, with Ronald Acuña Jr. scoring after a stolen base and a sacrifice fly from Matt Olson. Mauricio Dubón, who had a go-ahead homer in the previous game, contributed two hits, including a solo shot in the eighth that ended a streak of 14 consecutive batters retired by the Blue Jays' pitching staff.

Looking ahead, the Braves will aim to regroup as they prepare to host the Pittsburgh Pirates this weekend, who are coming off a strong performance against Houston.
