Boise State's Entry into Reimagined Pac-12 Sparks CFP Aspirations

BOISE, Idaho - The Boise State Broncos are set to make waves in college football as they join a newly shaped Pac-12, which will become an eight-team league in July 2026. This restructuring comes at a time when the College Football Playoff (CFP) landscape is evolving, creating a more competitive environment for teams outside the traditional power conferences.

The upcoming playoff format will now feature an automatic bid from a group of six conferences, increasing the competition for non-power teams. Notably, the new regulations ensure that champions from the four major conferences will have guaranteed playoff spots, regardless of their rankings. Additionally, Notre Dame is eligible if it finishes within the top 12, while the highest-ranked Group of Six team will secure a playoff berth regardless of conference affiliation. Under these rules, last year's playoff participants would have seen a different lineup, with teams like Duke and Notre Dame making the cut instead of James Madison and Miami.

With Boise State joining the Pac-12 alongside Colorado State, Fresno State, San Diego State, Utah State, and Texas State, the conference has gained significant strength. As the season approaches, Boise State emerges as a leading contender, especially after a season that ended with disappointment despite winning the Mountain West title. The Broncos' inconsistent performance was highlighted by a rough start, including a significant loss to South Florida.

In preparation for the 2026 season, the Broncos will rely on the health and performance of quarterback Maddux Madsen, who struggled last year due to injuries. The team will also look to bolster its offense, with key returning players at running back and wide receiver. On defense, while they've lost some starters, they have experienced players who can step up.

Boise State's early schedule will provide a crucial test, starting with a challenging game against Oregon, where they have struggled historically. A critical matchup against Memphis at home will further gauge their potential as they aim for a spot in the playoff discussions.
