Braves May Consider Trading $20 Million Gold Glove Winner Ahead of Deadline

The Atlanta Braves are enjoying a solid season, establishing a considerable lead in the NL East. However, not all players are contributing as expected, particularly Ha-Seong Kim, who has struggled since returning from an injury. As the trade deadline approaches, the team is assessing his future with the organization.

According to Chris Dimino of 680 The Fan, “Sounds like the Braves may be approaching a crossroads with Ha-Seong Kim. The belief internally may still be there, but if this continues another couple weeks, it feels like a legitimate ‘what are we doing at shortstop?’ conversation is coming.” Despite having numerous chances to find his form, Kim has failed to provide consistent performance.

Braves General Manager Alex Anthopoulos has indicated that the team plans to be active as the deadline nears. He stated, “I fully expect and hope that we will be engaged in trades come July. I'm not trying to overly excite anybody or promise anything. But if we're playing the way we are right now, we're going to be in there.” With this context, Kim's situation is under scrutiny, especially with players like Jorge Mateo and Mauricio Dubón performing well.

Nick Halden from HTHB noted, “Trading away Kim isn't about what you can receive in return for the infielder, but handing the veteran a needed change of scenery.” The Braves could use the opportunity to free up a spot on the roster for someone who might be more impactful in their postseason ambitions. Mateo and Dubón can provide the needed flexibility, playing multiple infield positions and even covering left field.

While Kim has a month to improve his performance, the Braves find themselves in a challenging situation. Currently earning $20 million this season and set to become a free agent, a trade may not be a disaster for Atlanta. Although he remains a proficient defender, his offensive output will need significant enhancement if he hopes to stay with the team.
