Brayan Bello Struggles Continue with MLB's Highest ERA

Boston Red Sox pitcher Brayan Bello has found himself in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons this season, as his performance on the mound has drawn significant attention. The latest development? Bello now holds the unfortunate distinction of having the highest earned run average (ERA) in Major League Baseball.

In a recent game against the Baltimore Orioles, interim manager Chad Tracy decided against utilizing an opener, a choice that backfired significantly. Following a strong outing from rookie Payton Tolle, who pitched six scoreless innings in an 8-1 victory just a day prior, the Red Sox fell to the Orioles 8-2 in the final match of their series.

Bello's struggles were evident right from the outset; he gave up a hit to Taylor Ward on his very first pitch and soon allowed a single from Adley Rutschman, which brought the first run of the game across the plate. Despite a double play that appeared to limit the damage, a walk to the next batter initiated a streak of seven consecutive players reaching base. Ultimately, he surrendered six runs in the first inning alone.

Although Bello managed to settle down for three scoreless innings afterward, he faced another setback in the fifth, concluding the game with eight earned runs on seven hits and three walks over five innings. His ERA has now ballooned to 6.34, placing him at the bottom of the league rankings among 72 qualified starting pitchers.

In addition to his high ERA, Bello has pitched the fewest innings in the league while allowing the most earned runs and ranking third in hits surrendered. His season has been marked by extreme inconsistencies, with May showcasing two shutout performances and two games where he allowed over seven runs. This rollercoaster of results has made Bello's season one of the most perplexing for a Red Sox pitcher in recent history.
