Brewers Edge Guardians 2-1 with Late Heroics from Mitchell and Turang

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Garrett Mitchell's solo home run in the seventh inning propelled the Milwaukee Brewers to a narrow 2-1 victory against the Cleveland Guardians on Tuesday evening. The game took a dramatic turn when the Guardians equalized in the seventh, but Mitchell quickly responded by launching his fifth home run on a 2-1 pitch, sending the ball 440 feet into center field.

Prior to Mitchell's game-changing hit, the Guardians had managed to tie the score at one apiece. Stuart Fairchild walked and advanced on a wild pitch, ultimately scoring on a two-out single from Gabriel Arias, bringing the game to a tense 1-1 draw.

Milwaukee's pitching staff excelled, with Abner Uribe throwing a flawless eighth inning despite stranding a runner at third base. Trevor Megill came in to finish the game, securing his ninth save out of 11 chances with a perfect ninth inning.

Brice Turang had given the Brewers an early lead with his 11th home run, a two-out shot off Slade Cecconi in the fourth inning, marking the first score of the game. The Guardians had opportunities to capitalize, stranding runners on second and third in the sixth. Joel Kuhnel relieved with a runner on first and two outs, but after allowing a double, he managed to get out of the inning with a groundout from pinch-hitter Daniel Schneemann.

Making his debut for the Brewers was highly-regarded shortstop prospect Cooper Pratt, who recently signed an eight-year contract worth $50.75 million. Pratt went hitless with three groundouts in his first three at-bats, but did contribute defensively by starting a double play in the second inning, despite committing an error in the fourth.

Starting pitcher Robert Gasser delivered a strong performance, allowing only two hits over 5 2/3 innings while striking out five and walking two, as he searches for his first major league win following Tommy John surgery in June 2024.

Looking ahead, the Guardians will have Gavin Williams (9-3, 3.32 ERA) on the mound for Wednesday's game, while the Brewers will counter with Brandon Sproat (1-4, 5.70).
