Broncos Bolster Roster with Two Additions from UFL's St. Louis BattleHawks

The Denver Broncos have strengthened their roster by signing two players from the UFL's St. Louis BattleHawks. Among the new additions is Hakeem Butler, who returns to the NFL for the third time in his career after showcasing his skills this spring. Officially signed on Monday, Butler, a former fourth-round draft pick from Iowa State in 2019, has yet to find consistent success in the league, having played for five different teams prior to joining the Broncos.

Despite his struggles in the NFL, Butler has demonstrated undeniable talent in the UFL, where he recorded 29 receptions for 641 yards and three touchdowns across nine games this season. Standing at 6-foot-5 and weighing around 240 pounds, the 30-year-old adds significant size to Denver's already competitive wide receiver lineup. The Broncos' group features notable names such as Courtland Sutton, Jaylen Waddle, Troy Franklin, Marvin Mims Jr., and Pat Bryant, all of whom seem to be secure in their roster positions.

Butler's journey has included a brief stint with the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he was waived due to an injury settlement, and another opportunity with the Cincinnati Bengals, which did not result in a spot on the 53-man roster. Initially drafted by the Arizona Cardinals, an injury during his rookie campaign hindered his progress, leading to his release. Although he had a short time with the Philadelphia Eagles, he has yet to catch a pass during a regular-season game in the NFL.

In addition to Butler, the Broncos also signed defensive back and kick returner Sean Fresch from the BattleHawks. Fresch has experience returning kicks and punts, and he previously played for the San Antonio Brahmas. His addition is particularly intriguing from a special teams perspective, especially as Marvin Mims enters a contract year. The Broncos may be considering Fresch as a potential alternative or to shift Mims' focus more towards his receiving role.

The Broncos have a history of successfully identifying talent from spring leagues, as demonstrated by Dondrea Tillman, who has made a significant impact with nine sacks in the last two seasons after contributing to the Birmingham Stallions' UFL Championship win in 2024.
