Buffalo Gap Stages Dramatic Comeback to Defeat Defending State Champion
SALEM — On Friday morning, Andrew Grove, the former athletic director at Buffalo Gap, motivated softball coach Holly Desper with an inspiring message. His text read, "You've knocked on the door five years now. How about we just knock the door down?" Desper shared this message with her team before they headed to the Virginia High School League Class 1 state softball semifinal, marking the sixth consecutive year the Bison reached this stage, but they had fallen short in each of the previous five attempts.
The motivational words resonated with the players, and they delivered a stunning performance, overcoming defending Class 1 state champion Eastside with a score of 4-2. With this victory, Buffalo Gap advances to the state championship game scheduled for Saturday, June 13, at 11 a.m. at Moyer Sports Complex in Salem. They will face William Campbell, who secured a surprising 4-1 win over Auburn in the first semifinal.
Buffalo Gap had previously triumphed over William Campbell to claim the Region 1B title on June 4, showcasing their ability to rally from behind, just as they did in the semifinal match against Eastside. In that game, the Bison had to claw back from a two-run deficit, which has become a hallmark of their recent performances. They previously scored six runs in the fourth inning against Lancaster in the state quarterfinals to secure a 7-1 victory.
In the semifinal, Buffalo Gap found themselves down by two runs heading into the fourth inning. However, momentum shifted when Paige Showalter drew a two-out walk, followed by Elissa Caricofe's double that brought Showalter home. "I was more focused on just getting a base hit," Caricofe explained. "I know I have power, but Emma Sartin is just an insane pitcher. I just needed to put the bat on the ball." Sartin, who will continue her softball career at the University of North Carolina Greensboro, had previously thrown a perfect game in the quarterfinals, but the Bison's rally ended her hopes for another.
Despite leading 2-1 going into the fifth inning, Eastside's advantage was quickly erased by Buffalo Gap. With two runners on and one out, Bailey Tribble reached base on an error, allowing Makenzie Wooddell to score the equalizer. Faith Showalter then stepped up and hit a double, driving in two runs and putting Buffalo Gap ahead 4-2. "I had two strikes, and I was like, 'I've got to get a hit,'" Showalter recalled. Although Caricofe and Showalter accounted for the team's only hits, they were pivotal. Tribble pitched the first four innings for Buffalo Gap before Rachel Showalter entered and delivered three hitless innings of relief. Coach Desper praised her team’s resilience, noting, "They were determined. They weren't going to settle for losing this game again."
