BYU Golf Falls Short at NCAA Championships, Ending Season Early

BYU's journey in the 2026 NCAA Men's Golf Championships concluded on Sunday, despite the team not competing that day at La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, California. Their score of 1-under 287 from Thursday's third round was added to the leaderboard, and unfortunately, the Cougars found themselves at +9, five strokes shy of the cut for the final round.

Only the top 15 teams progress to Monday's fourth round, and BYU's tournament ended after they qualified for nationals with a strong fourth-place finish at the Athens Regional. Last year, they advanced to the finals, finishing tied for 13th place.

This marks the second consecutive year that the Cougars have been unable to reach the match play segment of the tournament, which is particularly disappointing for the team and its fans, as this championship was the last for head coach Bruce Brockbank, who is retiring after 41 years with the program.

During the tournament, standout freshman Kihei Akina posted a score of 1-under 71, which was officially recorded on Sunday. He finished tied for seventh, alongside Auburn's Jackson Koivun, the nation's top-ranked college golfer. Akina excelled with an impressive total of 6-under over 54 holes, but his teammates struggled to maintain consistent performance throughout the rounds.

BYU's performance was ultimately marred by an 8-over round on Friday, with their totals being 1-under on Thursday and 2-over on Saturday, leading to their final score of +9. As the tournament progressed, Auburn held the lead at 22-under, followed by Texas at 19-under and Vanderbilt at 9-under. Arizona, Oklahoma State, and UCLA were tied for fourth at 8-under, marking a competitive field.
