BYU Men's Track Team Faces Challenges on Final Day of NCAA Championships
During the last day of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon, the BYU men's track team struggled to maintain momentum after a strong start. Following impressive performances by decathlete Ben Barton earlier in the competition, the Cougars found themselves in a difficult position as the day progressed.
In the 1,500-meter race, junior Carter Cutting, who previously clinched the NCAA indoor title, found himself in contention until the final stretch. With just 200 meters remaining, Oregon's Simeon Birnbaum, the collegiate record holder, surged ahead, catching competitors off guard. Cutting attempted to close the gap but ultimately finished eighth with a time of 3:38.10. His coach, Ed Eyestone, noted, “If he had played it safer and waited until the homestretch, he would’ve been running for second. He went for it, and it cost him a few places. You can’t knock the effort.”
Freshman Trayvon Kitchen also faced setbacks in his race. Known for his strong finishing kick, Kitchen was positioned well until he was inadvertently knocked off the track less than three laps from the finish. Although he initially chased after three-time NCAA champion Habtom Samuel, he ultimately faded to 14th place with a time of 13:57.42. Eyestone remarked, “After he got shoved into the infield, it seemed to get into his head. He lost his rhythm and focus.”
In contrast, Isaac Hedengren managed to secure a point for the team by finishing eighth in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 13:48.84. Eyestone praised Hedengren's effort against a tough international field.
The BYU women’s team will look to improve their standings on Saturday, with standout freshman Jane Hedengren competing in the 5,000-meter run after her impressive third-place finish in the 10,000-meter final. Veteran runners Carlee Hansen and Carmen Alder will also aim for success in the finals of the 1,500-meter race, while Kaiah Fisher is set to compete in the discus.
