Detroit’s victory over Orlando in Game 5 marked only the second time in NBA history that two No. 1 overall picks scored 40 or more points against each other.
According to ESPN, the previous instance came in Game 1 of the 2001 NBA Finals. Allen Iverson scored 48 points for the Philadelphia 76ers, while Shaquille O’Neal recorded 44 for the Los Angeles Lakers.
That game ended in a 107-101 win for the 76ers, setting a benchmark for elite individual performances under pressure. And now, Cunningham and Banchero have added their names to that short list.

Banchero acknowledged after the game that his battles with Cunningham are nothing new.
He explained at the press conference that their rivalry dates back to their early development, long before either player entered the NBA.
