David Benavidez made another direct push for Canelo Alvarez after destroying Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez in Las Vegas earlier this month.

Benavidez dropped Ramirez twice, stopped him in the sixth round and captured the WBA and WBO cruiserweight titles while Canelo watched from ringside.

The unbeaten star then called for the Canelo fight again, but that challenge has now received a firm answer.

Canelo is scheduled to face Christian Mbilli on September 12 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, for the WBC super middleweight title, and that context matters because Benavidez is now operating far above the division where their rivalry first began.

Therefore, when asked about ‘The Mexican Monster’s’ callout, Canelo told Ring Magazine’s Mike Coppinger: “Right now it’s just impossible. He can fight with the heavyweights.

“When we were both in 168 lbs, I fought every champion at the division, and I said to myself, ‘Why did he never fight those champions?’ And then, if he was a champion at that point, I’d fight him, because my goal was being undisputed.”

The remark pushes the issue back towards timing and weight. Canelo’s view is that the natural window for the fight was at super middleweight, not now.

Benavidez has since won titles at 175 and 200 pounds, while the 35-year-old Mexican is returning to the 168-pound picture against Mbilli.

That does not end public demand for the matchup, but Canelo’s latest answer makes clear he does not see Benavidez as a realistic opponent at the moment.
