Mississippi State Falls Short in Super Regional, Eliminated by Georgia

ATHENS, Georgia — Mississippi State's efforts to mount a comeback fell short as they were swept by Georgia, losing 11-9 in a thrilling 10-inning contest during Game 2 of the Athens Super Regional. The defeat marks the end of the season for Mississippi State, while Georgia (51-12) advances to the College World Series for the first time since 2008.

“We're not going to walk out of here feeling good about the end and that we accomplished something,” Mississippi State coach Brian O’Connor stated. “We go to work every day to be in a position to win a national championship. That didn't happen this year, and we'll get right back to work.” The game mirrored the excitement of Game 1, turning into a back-and-forth battle that required extra innings to decide the victor.

In the 10th inning, Tre Phelps reached base due to an error by third baseman Ace Reese, setting up Daniel Jackson for a two-run homer to left field, marking Georgia's fourth long ball of the game. Mississippi State had fought back, but as Jacob Parker stepped up with the chance to win it in the bottom half of the inning, he struck out facing a 1-2 count, sealing the game and the series for Georgia.

O’Connor acknowledged Parker's disappointment, saying, “I know he hurts because the game ends with his at bat. But we wouldn't be where we're at without him and his teammates' contributions.” Throughout the game, Mississippi State struggled with runners in scoring position, hitting just 4 for 18 compared to Georgia's 5 for 23.

After trailing by five runs early on, Mississippi State made a notable effort to rally, highlighted by Vytas Valincius's home run and an RBI single from Bryce Chance. Despite the resilience, Georgia responded with timely scoring, including a critical single that tied the game in the ninth inning.

Mississippi State concluded their season with a record of 43-19, showing strength against non-top 10 teams but struggling against ranked opponents. O’Connor reflected on the challenges of building a competitive roster, expressing pride in the team’s accomplishments despite falling short this season. Parker, who shone in the postseason with five home runs, looked forward to building on the experience next year, stating, “It was just such a fun group, such a fun year.”
