Cardinals QB Jacoby Brissett Ends Holdout, Set to Join Minicamp
Jacoby Brissett has concluded his holdout and is expected to attend the Arizona Cardinals’ mandatory minicamp this week, as reported by ESPN's Josh Weinfuss and Jeremy Fowler. Brissett had previously been absent from all offseason activities, seeking a new contract during this period.
The quarterback missed both phases of the team's offseason program and opted out of all three OTA sessions. Had he continued to stay away from the minicamp, he risked incurring fines that could total $107,911.
Last season, Brissett achieved a career-best by throwing for 3,366 yards, along with 23 touchdowns and eight interceptions, while starting 12 games for the Cardinals in place of the injured Kyler Murray. Unfortunately, the team ended the season with a 3-14 record, marking their fourth consecutive year without a playoff berth.
Since then, the Cardinals have parted ways with Murray, who has signed a contract with the Minnesota Vikings. The Vikings are reportedly set to pay him at the veteran minimum, while the Cardinals will cover a significant portion of his $36.8 million salary for the upcoming season.
After a standout year, Brissett is aiming for compensation more reflective of a starting quarterback’s value. He is currently under contract for $4.88 million in base salary next season, with $1.5 million guaranteed. As the likely starter, he will be joined on the roster by Gardner Minshew, Kedon Slovis, and Carson Beck, the latter being a recent third-round draft pick from Miami.
While negotiations for a new agreement remain unresolved and were reportedly "significantly" apart last month, it appears unlikely that a new deal will materialize before the start of workouts on Tuesday. Despite the contract uncertainty, Brissett is ready to resume his duties with the Cardinals.
