Carson Beck's Progress in Cardinals' Training Camp

As the Arizona Cardinals wrapped up a month of training camp, one question was frequently asked by observers: Where is rookie quarterback Carson Beck? Initially, Beck seemed to be overshadowed by Gardner Minshew, who took the lead with the starters, while Kedon Slovis primarily handled backup duties. Despite Jacoby Brissett's absence, Beck, selected in the third round of the draft, found himself further down the depth chart, receiving limited chances to showcase his skills.

However, Beck remains unfazed by his current standing. He entered spring camp with three specific objectives: first, to "learn the playbook"; second, to "build connections with my teammates"; and third, to "become the best quarterback that I possibly can." He believes he has successfully achieved these goals.

Beck previously shared that during a media session on May 8, he was still in the early phases of mastering the playbook. While he had grasped the basics, the intricate details were still a work in progress. Fast forward to now, and he has committed those plays to memory through extensive workdays filled with meetings that often outnumbered practice sessions. He is now tackling more advanced concepts, familiarizing himself with offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur's voice in his headset, and learning to lead teammates in the huddle.

Despite entering the NFL with six years of college experience, Beck acknowledges that adapting to the professional game requires significant effort. "The NFL game is 100% different than the college game," he said, noting the complexities of defensive strategies that vary greatly from what he faced at Georgia. He emphasized the importance of understanding where to look for defenders and deciphering coverages, as everything in the NFL is often disguised.

Beck finds some of these changes refreshing. Unlike the more predictable coverage schemes prevalent in college football, the NFL demands quick, instinctive reactions from quarterbacks. "It allows you to go out there and just react," he explained, adding that while having a pre-snap plan is essential, ultimately, it’s about being able to improvise in response to the defense.

Coaches have also observed Beck's growing comfort level throughout the camp. Initially, his inquiries were basic, such as "What's my read?" But recently, he posed more sophisticated questions, demonstrating a deeper understanding of the game. Offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett acknowledged that while there is much for Beck to learn, the urgency of the NFL doesn’t allow for a slow learning process. For Beck to become a vital part of the team's future, he will need to demonstrate his abilities during actual games, not just in practice.

Under the hot June sun, the Cardinals have been patient with Beck's development, prioritizing his comfort within the system over immediate playing time. And Beck himself believes he has laid a solid foundation for what lies ahead, stating, "The expectations that I have for myself, I feel like I've been pushing those and pushing those and pushing those, and each day, they only get greater and greater."
