Bemidji State Announces $2.5 Million Renovation for BSU Gymnasium
BEMIDJI — The BSU Gymnasium at Bemidji State University is set to undergo a significant renovation, aimed at enhancing the facilities for Beaver Basketball, Beaver Volleyball, and the local community. The ambitious $2.5 million project, which will be funded through private donations and crowdfunding efforts, is expected to commence in March 2027 and conclude by October 2027. Upgrades will include new bleachers, an observation room, improved accessibility features, and the newly established Buckingham-Baalke Court.
Leading the fundraising efforts are alumni Trent and Beth (Buckingham) Baalke, who are contributing a pivotal $1 million donation to the project. This generous gift is seen as transformative and aligns with the Facility Upgrades and Faculty Excellence initiatives of the For the North campaign. The Baalkes expressed their desire to give back, recognizing the positive impact that their experiences at BSU had on their lives. “We’re fortunate to be in a position to help and to better the experience for students. Because somebody once did it for us,” Trent Baalke stated. “BSU set us up for success and for the life we have with each other, so we’re excited to give back.”
Britt Lauritsen, the director of athletics at Bemidji State, emphasized the importance of the Baalkes' donation as a long-term investment in the university's current and future students. “Trent and Beth Baalke’s contribution to this project exemplifies the power of the Bemidji State experience,” Lauritsen remarked, highlighting how their gift will foster opportunities for student growth and leadership.
The renovation is not merely about enhancing the physical space; it represents a commitment to community building. The updated gymnasium will serve as an inclusive venue for a variety of events, from athletic competitions to the state's longest-running powwow and community gatherings. The Baalkes’ donation, alongside other significant contributions, brings the project closer to its financial goal, with public donations welcomed until February 2027 at bsualumni.org/donate/gymnasium.
Opened in 1960, the BSU Gymnasium has been a cornerstone for the university's athletic programs, hosting men's and women's basketball and volleyball. Over the years, it has also facilitated numerous high school tournaments, community events, and graduation ceremonies. Previous renovations include a floor replacement in 2004, scoreboard upgrades in 2007, and new lighting added in 2021. Beth Baalke, a former standout basketball player and a member of the Athletic Hall of Fame, and Trent Baalke, who enjoyed a successful football career at BSU before advancing to the NFL, are both committed to enhancing the legacy of their alma mater.
