North Bend's Raleigh Collier Takes State Title in 800 Meters

Raleigh Collier from North Bend has emerged as a state champion at the Middle School Meet of Champions, a significant event for middle school track and field in Oregon. The eighth-grader clinched the title in the 800 meters, finishing with an impressive time of 2 minutes and 6.94 seconds, narrowly defeating Gus VandenHeuvel from the Whisper Running Club in Vancouver, Washington.

In addition to his victory in the 800 meters, Collier also achieved a personal best in the 1,500 meters, securing seventh place with a time of 4:22.08. James Fullerton from Grant Cluster in Portland took first in that race, clocking in at 4:12.69, which was nearly six seconds ahead of the runner-up.

Another standout athlete from the region was Tyler Camp of Azalea in Brookings, who triumphed in the 100-meter hurdles with a new best time of 14.05 seconds. Camp also placed third in the 200 hurdles, finishing in 26.64 seconds. Meanwhile, Jacob Bates from North Bend came in 11th in the 200 hurdles with a time of 29.17 seconds.

Marshfield's Gavin Simpson excelled in the sprints, finishing fourth in the 100 meters with a time of 11.90 seconds after previously achieving a new personal record of 11.70 seconds in the preliminaries. He also placed sixth in the high jump, clearing 5 feet, 6 inches. Owen Fisher from Marshfield took seventh in the 400 meters with a time of 55.00 seconds and also competed in the long jump.

In the girls' events, Leila Newman from Azalea finished 10th in the 800 meters with a time of 2:28.47. Katherine Kessi from Scappoose dominated the races, winning both the 800 meters and the 1,500 meters with times of 2:18.48 and 4:38.64, respectively. Kessi's teammate, seventh-grader Margaret Paul, secured second place in the 1,500 meters and won the 3,000 meters with a time of 10:13.73.

North Bend's Kaiyan Carter participated in the pole vault, tying for fifth place with a clearance of 7 feet. The event showcased a range of talented young athletes, highlighting the burgeoning track and field scene at the middle school level in Oregon.
