Catalina Baronci Named Palm Beach 7A-5A Softball Player of the Year
Catalina Baronci's high school softball journey has come to a close. The senior from Wellington has concluded her remarkable athletic career but has chosen not to pursue collegiate softball, opting instead to join her family's business. "I was originally committed to play at Georgia State University, and I moved here last February," Baronci explained. "And when I moved here, I was like, I don’t think I could be this far from my family."
Baronci, whose family owns three Italian restaurants in Boynton Beach and Wellington, excelled during her final season, earning the title of Sun Sentinel Palm Beach County 7A-5A Player of the Year. A standout moment occurred in April when she led her team to a 6-2 victory against reigning 6A state champions, Doral Academy, hitting three home runs and driving in all six runs. "I was like, ‘Oh my goodness. I really just did this,’” she recalled. "I think the first home run, when I hit it, I was like, ‘Oh, yes. I got us on the board first. Let’s go.’”
The senior's performance was not just impressive; it was emotional, especially when she saw her mother in tears and her teammates celebrating. "I realized in that moment, I was like, ‘We just won this game. We just beat Doral,’” Baronci said, reflecting on the unforgettable experience.
Although the Wolverines faced a disappointing end in the first round of the regional playoffs against Port St. Lucie, Baronci remains positive about her decision to step away from the sport after a memorable final season. “I definitely have reminisced a lot,” she shared. “I’ve been playing since I was 4 years old, so it was definitely a hard thing to end.” Despite some regrets about the team's potential, she is eager to see what the future holds for her. “I’m very content with the decision that I’ve made, and I’m excited to see where life takes me at this point.”
