James Slipper Makes International Rugby Comeback for Nations Championship
SYDNEY (AP) — Experienced prop James Slipper has marked his return to international rugby by being named in Australia's squad for the initial three matches of the Nations Championship in July. His comeback was anticipated earlier this week, and he is joined by newcomers Declan Meredith, Lachlan Shaw, and Miles Amatosero in coach Joe Schmidt's 37-player roster.
At 37, Slipper holds the record for the most test appearances for Australia, with 151 caps to his name. He had a notable season playing Super Rugby for the ACT Brumbies and has committed to the team until 2027. Earlier this year, he also became the most-capped player in Super Rugby history, achieving this milestone after participating in his 203rd match.
The Wallabies will kick off their season with a highly anticipated match against Ireland in Sydney on July 4, followed by games against France in Brisbane on July 11 and Italy in Perth on July 18. These matches will be part of the inaugural Nations Championship, featuring a competition between six southern and six northern hemisphere teams, culminating in a finals weekend in London from November 27-29.
Angus Bell, who has been on a year-long sabbatical with Ulster in Ireland, is also included in the Wallabies lineup. Amatosero, who recently celebrated his 24th birthday, has spent the last three years playing for Clermont Auvergne in France. Additionally, the squad includes British-based Len Ikitau and Tom Hooper, along with France-based prop Taniela Tupou.
Schmidt commented on the selection process, stating, “There have been ongoing discussions amongst the coaches for a number of months, and, as always, there are some very good players who have not been selected for this first international window. We’ve settled on a group that we think will work hard and can perform well against three top-tier European teams with the added excitement of competing in the new Nations Championship for the first time.”
The complete Wallabies squad includes a mix of seasoned players and fresh talent, setting the stage for a competitive season ahead.
