Catholic Central Dominates Rochester Adams with Record-Breaking Triples in State Championship
East Lansing — Detroit Catholic Central showcased an extraordinary offensive performance during Saturday's Division 1 state baseball championship, overpowering Rochester Adams with an impressive display of triples. The Shamrocks made history by hitting five triples, leading to a decisive 7-0 victory at Michigan State’s McLane Stadium.
This victory marks Catholic Central's first state title in baseball since 1999, capping off a remarkable tournament run following a semifinal loss to Warren De La Salle in the Catholic League tournament on their home turf. Head coach Ryan Rogowski praised his team's effort, stating, “What a game right there. What a hitting performance. I’m telling you, can we hit the ball or what? Them Shamrocks can hit.”
On the mound, senior Mikey Laser was instrumental in shutting down the Adams offense, allowing only four hits throughout the game. “I was just trying to get ahead with first-pitch strikes,” Laser commented. “Just get the ball to my defense and I know they’ll make plays.” This solid pitching performance was particularly crucial against an Adams team making its first championship appearance since 1996.
Adams, under the leadership of coach Andy Lamkin, who previously led the team during their back-to-back championship losses in the mid-90s, aimed to secure their first title. However, they struggled offensively against Laser and the Shamrocks. Lamkin acknowledged, “You’ve got to give him a lot of credit. He pitched fast. When we did hit the ball hard, it was at people. They outhit us. They took it to us at the beginning, and nobody has done that to us this year.”
The offensive onslaught for Catholic Central began right from the first pitch, with senior Bennett Thompson hitting a sharp double to the left-center gap, quickly followed by an RBI triple from Dylan Fairchild. The scoring continued as Fairchild hit another triple in the second inning, bringing in two more runs, giving Catholic Central a commanding 4-0 lead. The Shamrocks built on this momentum, scoring additional runs in the fifth and seventh innings to secure their victory.
