Danny Green Offers Insights on Lakers’ Strategy for Building Around Luka Doncic

This summer presents a pivotal opportunity for the Los Angeles Lakers to construct a championship-worthy team centered on Luka Doncic. With an estimated $50 million in salary cap flexibility, the Lakers have the chance to not only re-sign key players but also to attract new talent from outside.

The Lakers' roster currently shows weaknesses in depth, athleticism, defensive capabilities, and three-point shooting. Danny Green, who played a crucial role in the Lakers' 2020 championship win, shared his thoughts on the team's future during a recent segment on ESPN L.A. radio. He emphasized the importance of building a roster that includes “defensive guys” and shooters. “If you wanna have a great winning team, you need some superstars and you need a good quality big man that can rebound and some 3-and-D guys around him,” Green explained. “If you can get that at a good price, you have a good chance of being successful and winning some championships.”

Green's perspective aligns with a widespread belief among analysts that the Lakers require more two-way players—those capable of excelling on both offense and defense—to contend for titles. The successful 2020 championship team featured essential contributions from two-way players like Green himself, Avery Bradley, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, and Alex Caruso, alongside stars LeBron James and Anthony Davis.

Additionally, the Lakers should consider enhancing their center position. Whether they decide to replace Deandre Ayton or retain him while securing a solid backup, the ideal scenario would involve having a center who can score, block shots, and rebound effectively. At the very least, the team needs a defensively-oriented center with a strong work ethic to secure the paint.
