Celebrating BYU's Top MLB Alumni: A Look at Their Impact
For the first time in six years, three former Brigham Young University (BYU) baseball athletes are currently active in Major League Baseball (MLB): Daniel Schneemann with the Cleveland Guardians, Justin Sterner of the Oakland Athletics, and Michael Rucker, who plays for the Seattle Mariners. Since Ken Hunt made his MLB debut with the Cincinnati Reds in 1961, a total of 27 former Cougars have graced the professional league, accumulating 10 All-Star selections, several World Series championships, and a spot in the Baseball Hall of Fame.
Jack Morris stands out as BYU's most notable MLB alumni. With a career spanning from 1977 to 1994, Morris achieved a remarkable record of 254 wins and 186 losses along with a 3.90 earned run average and 2,478 strikeouts. He became a Hall of Fame inductee in 2018 and is celebrated for his legendary performance in the 1991 World Series, where he pitched 10 shutout innings against the Atlanta Braves, leading the Minnesota Twins to victory. "Intense competitor with a spirited drive and determination who propelled his teams as staff ace," his Hall of Fame plaque reads.
Wally Joyner is another exceptional BYU product, known for his impressive hitting prowess. His MLB career lasted from 1986 to 2001, during which he amassed a batting average of .289, with 2,060 hits and 204 home runs. Joyner made a splash in his rookie year by winning the Home Run Derby and contributing significantly to the California Angels' success. His career also included stints with the Kansas City Royals, Atlanta Braves, and San Diego Padres, where he was a key player on the 1998 National League pennant-winning team.
Rick Aguilera, a three-time All-Star and two-time World Series champion, also made his mark in the MLB. Playing primarily as a closer, Aguilera recorded 318 saves over his career from 1985 to 2000. He spent a significant portion of his career with the Minnesota Twins, where he became a fan favorite and contributed to the team's 1991 World Series win alongside fellow BYU alum Jack Morris. His impressive performance earned him a place in the Twins' Hall of Fame.
Lastly, Cory Snyder, who played from 1986 to 1994, left an indelible mark as a standout college player before transitioning to the professional league. His accomplishments at BYU set a high standard for future athletes from the university. As BYU continues to produce talented baseball players, their legacy in the MLB remains a point of pride for the institution.
