Magic Johnson Urges Lakers to Prioritize Youth and Athleticism

With the NBA Finals concluded and the New York Knicks crowned champions, the Los Angeles Lakers are now focusing on the upcoming free agency period and their roster improvements for the next season. Retaining key players such as LeBron James and Austin Reaves is a priority, but simply maintaining the current lineup may not suffice for the Lakers to emerge as serious title contenders.

During a recent segment on ESPN's "Get Up," Lakers icon Magic Johnson emphasized the necessity for the team to enhance their youth and athleticism to effectively compete against teams like the Knicks, San Antonio Spurs, and Oklahoma City Thunder. “When you look at the playoffs, look at New York, you look at San Antonio, how they’re built,” Johnson noted. “The Lakers need to be younger, more athletic because right now the league, look at who they’re going to have to beat in the West.”

The Lakers faced an early exit in the playoffs, swept by the Thunder in the second round, while the Knicks and Spurs showcased their prowess by reaching the Finals, ranking highly in defensive metrics and fast-break scoring. In contrast, Los Angeles struggled during the regular season, finishing 16th in fast-break points, 20th in defensive rating, and 22nd in pace.

As the team moves into the summer, the Lakers are expected to have substantial salary cap space. However, much of this budget will likely be allocated to retaining their core players, potentially limiting their ability to recruit quicker and more agile athletes essential for elevating the team's performance.
