Before replacing Alex Cora in late April, Chad Tracy had never managed in the Major Leagues before.
When Tracy was promoted from managing Triple-A Worcester to interim manager of the Boston Red Sox, the team was floundering. The Red Sox were 10-17, last in the AL East and mired in a historically bad start.
Since then, they've stabilized a bit under Tracy, going 12-14 and staying just a few games out of a playoff spot.
During a recent interview with Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic (subscription required), Craig Breslow praised Tracy's performance over his first month on the job.
Craig Breslow fired Alex Cora and six coaches one month ago Tuesday. Has it made a difference?
“I certainly wouldn’t look back at our win-loss record over the last month and say it was this incredible success”

“That’s something I appreciate about Chad is his focus on creating the best environment possible around our players, and I want to support him in any way I can,” Breslow told McCaffrey.
A former player like Cora, Tracy already had strong relationships with several Boston players after managing them in Worcester. That foundation has served him well in his new role, as has his open-mindedness and willingness to learn.
“He’s a really stabilizing voice and inspires a lot of confidence from our player group,” Breslow added. “He’s always willing to have a conversation and engage on how he’s seeing the game or thinking about things and seeing roles and playing time. He’s also very willing to have conversations with players that may not be the most comfortable but (he) feels like is (an) important part of building trust and relationships.”
Tracy's players like and respect him, and they're playing hard for him. He's managed them to a better record this season than Cora did, but time will tell if he's able to lead them on a sustained hot streak that gets them back into contention.
