Christopher Bell's Crash Marks Most Severe Impact in NextGen Car History

Christopher Bell experienced a record-breaking crash during the NASCAR Cup Series event at Michigan International Speedway, which has been deemed the most severe impact in the four-year history of the NextGen car. The incident unfolded on Lap 148 when Chase Elliott lost control over a bump in Turn 3, colliding with Bell as they vied for second place. This collision sent Bell crashing into the wall, prompting a 21-minute repair of the SAFER Barrier, and resulted in a second impact when Elliott's car veered back into Bell's vehicle.

According to Mike Forde, NASCAR's communications executive, this incident not only represented the most significant impact since the NextGen car's introduction in 2022 but also the worst recorded since 2015 when Matt Harper, NASCAR's managing director of safety systems, began collecting impact data. Forde explained that the severity of the crash was evaluated using Delta-v, which measures changes in velocity during an accident.

"Delta-v is the measure of speed lost in an incident," Forde noted. He refrained from disclosing the specific Delta-v number for Bell, as that information is proprietary, but confirmed it was the highest recorded in the NextGen era. The data is shared with the driver and team for their own analysis.

Bell suffered a left wrist fracture and other undisclosed ankle injuries but has received medical clearance to race this upcoming weekend at Pocono Raceway. "He needed to have a follow-up visit with his physicians," Forde explained regarding the clearance process, emphasizing the collaboration between Bell's personal doctors and NASCAR's medical team.

In light of the crash, NASCAR conducted a thorough safety review of Bell's car and the surrounding safety systems, focusing on the head surround foam's thickness that supported Bell during the incident. "We want to see, ‘Hey, is this sort of the magic number?'" Forde stated, indicating that they are looking to improve safety measures based on this experience.
