Cincinnati Reds Navigate Challenges Without Elly De La Cruz
ST. LOUIS — The Cincinnati Reds are receiving encouraging updates regarding Elly De La Cruz, whose MRI to assess his hamstring recovery has been rescheduled to June 12, ahead of the original June 15 date. Prior to the Reds' matchup against the Cardinals, De La Cruz was seen engaging in light exercises on the field at Busch Stadium.
When the talented infielder was placed on the injured list last Monday due to a hamstring strain categorized between Grade 1 and Grade 2, the Reds anticipated a recovery period of two to four weeks. Since then, the team has had to adapt to his absence on the field.
With De La Cruz sidelined, Spencer Steer has stepped up significantly in the batting order, capitalizing on a strong season. "With the consistency of my timing, I’m giving myself a chance every pitch," Steer remarked. "That’s something I haven’t felt like I’ve been great at in the past." His improved timing has allowed him to perform at his best during this crucial period.
The Reds are also looking to Eugenio Suárez for more offensive production during this time. After a sluggish start to the season and a month-long stint on the injured list due to an oblique issue, Suárez has struggled to regain his form. "I feel very close," he said, reflecting on his performance. "The results will be there." The team is counting on him to regain his power-hitting prowess as De La Cruz recovers.
In the meantime, the Reds have filled De La Cruz's spot in the lineup with the young talents Edwin Arroyo and Noelvi Marte, both recently promoted to the majors. Arroyo has primarily played second base while Marte has taken on right field duties. "You see them when they’re really good, and you see them when they’re really bad," noted manager Terry Francona about the challenges faced by young players. Matt McLain has taken over at shortstop, providing solid defense, and the competition for playing time will intensify once De La Cruz returns.
