Clatsop County Athletes Shine at Oregon State Track Championships
This past weekend, Hayward Field in Eugene became the center stage for the Oregon State Track and Field Championships, where athletes from across the state gathered for a three-day competition. Clatsop County competitors made significant contributions to the event's numerous narratives, showcasing their talents and determination.
Among the standout performances was Astoria senior William Laman, who turned heads with his exceptional victory in the boys 3000 meters. Laman, who had dedicated countless early mornings to training, aimed to secure a state title and break a long-standing school record. Entering the race as the fifth seed, he faced tough competition from top runners, including Corbin Sage of Marist Catholic and Avery Chandler of Newport. Laman surged ahead in the final laps, ultimately finishing with a time of 8:39.146, more than 20 seconds faster than his previous best, fulfilling his goal of becoming a state champion.
In addition to Laman's success, Astoria's Jacob Biros finished fifth in the boys 300-meter hurdles with a time of 42.30 seconds. Meanwhile, the girls' team saw freshman Zoe Wright tie for eighth place in the high jump, clearing 4 feet, 10.25 inches. Sophomore Clara Moore excelled across multiple events, achieving sixth in long jump with a 16-foot, 6-inch leap and placing second in triple jump at 35 feet, 7.75 inches.
Knappa's boys distance team continued their legacy of excellence, highlighted by Wyatt Jacobson's back-to-back victory in the boys 3000 meters, clocking a personal best of 8:49.76. His teammates Rowdy Justus and Gavin Jasper also performed admirably, securing second and seventh places, respectively. Jacobson later secured another title by winning the boys 1500 meters, finishing in 4:03.41. Their combined efforts reaffirmed Knappa's status as a formidable force in track and field.
Overall, the championships offered a platform for Clatsop County's athletes to display their capabilities, with many leaving a lasting mark as they head into their next chapters, including college athletics for some. The dedication and hard work of these young athletes were evident throughout the competition, promising a bright future ahead.
