Cleveland's Tanner Bibee Sets Unfortunate Record with Winless Start
CLEVELAND (AP) — For a fleeting moment on Sunday, it seemed as though Cleveland's Tanner Bibee might finally catch a break. After conceding a leadoff home run for the second consecutive game, the right-handed pitcher left the field with a lead for the first time this season, as the Guardians were ahead of the Boston Red Sox 4-3 entering the seventh inning. However, the bullpen faltered spectacularly, leading to a 9-4 loss that cemented Bibee's position in an unwelcome historical context.
The Red Sox exploded for six runs in the seventh inning, making Bibee the 12th Opening Day starter since 1976 to have at least 10 starts without a win before June, as reported by Sportradar. He now holds the record for the most starts without a victory prior to June, and joins an unfortunate list that includes notable pitchers like Colorado's Kyle Freeland and Miami's José Ureña. Bibee's 0-7 record marks him as the first starter in the 125-year history of the Cleveland franchise to begin his season with 13 winless outings.
"I’ve said this in the past. I don’t have any control over it. All I can do is go out there, try to throw up some zeros and whatever happens, happens," Bibee reflected on his challenging start.
Despite his struggles, Bibee's performance on the mound showed some promise. Following Duran's homer in the first, he managed to limit the Red Sox to just one hit from the second to the fourth inning. The Guardians initially fought back, scoring twice in the fifth inning, but as the game progressed, the bullpen's inability to maintain the lead proved detrimental. The Guardians are currently experiencing one of the lowest challenge rates in the league, with a concerning 44.4% success rate, below the league average of 52.7%.
Bibee, a fifth-round pick in the 2021 draft, previously showcased his talent with a 22-12 record and a 3.25 ERA in his first two major league seasons. Despite his recent struggles, both he and the Guardians' management remain optimistic about his ability to bounce back. General manager Chris Antonetti noted, "I think as we look forward, we’ll start to see more of those outings in which he’s pitching more effectively than maybe some of those other hiccup." Bibee himself maintains confidence in his potential to turn the season around, stating, "You want to win games, but... it’s just figuring out what the kind of self-evaluation of it."
