Colorado's RB Commitment Steven Alexis Shifts to Illinois

Just nine days after pledging to the Colorado Buffaloes, three-star running back Steven Alexis has decided to withdraw his commitment. On Tuesday, he confirmed his commitment to the Illinois Fighting Illini.

Originally, Alexis selected Colorado over other contenders such as Pittsburgh, Illinois, and Iowa. The St. Petersburg, Florida native visited the Buffaloes on June 5 but appears to have made his commitment prematurely. According to 247Sports Composite, Alexis is ranked as the No. 1166 overall prospect, the No. 87 running back in the country, and the No. 117 player from Florida.

During his junior season in 2025, Alexis showcased his talent by rushing for 1,113 yards and scoring nine touchdowns on 124 carries, in addition to making eight catches for 50 yards. "I am officially committed to the University of Illinois! Thank you to God, my family, coaches, and everyone who has helped me along the way," Alexis tweeted, along with a picture of himself in an Illinois jersey.

With Alexis' departure, Colorado now has 16 commitments for the 2027 recruiting class, which currently ranks 38th nationally and 5th in the Big 12 Conference. Coach Deion Sanders' staff is actively pursuing three-star running back Kylan Bobo, who is set to announce his commitment on July 1, and they hold a favorable prediction for his choice.

As the offseason progresses, the Buffaloes are expected to make changes to their recruiting efforts to fill the void left by Alexis.
