After a narrow 6-5 victory over West Central in the sectional championship held on Monday in Remington, the Caston Comets are gearing up for a regional matchup against the Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian Braves this Saturday. The Class 1A No. 5 Comets, boasting a record of 21-5, will face the Braves, who hold an 8-14 record yet remain a formidable contender in various sports as a private institution.

The regional showdown is scheduled to take place at Fort Wayne Carroll High School, with the first pitch slated for 11 a.m. Tickets for the game can be purchased through IHSAA.org and EventLink.com. On paper, the Comets have the edge, currently ranked ninth in Class 1A according to the MaxPreps Computer Rankings, while the Braves sit at 26th.

Despite their subpar record, the Braves have shown resilience, bouncing back from a five-game losing streak to secure victories over Fremont (6-5) and Fort Wayne Canterbury (14-4) in the tournament. Leading the Braves' pitching staff is sophomore Max Warner, who has a 1.13 ERA and 43 strikeouts over 31 innings, while senior Brady Ellington contributes with a 4.03 ERA and 34 strikeouts in 33 innings. Junior Isaac Stayton also played a key role in their triumph against Canterbury.

Meanwhile, the Comets have utilized a trio of strong pitchers throughout the tournament. Junior Carson Harness leads with a 2.60 ERA, having struck out 96 batters in 62 innings. Sophomore Logan Mollenkopf follows closely with an impressive 8-1 record and a 2.83 ERA, while junior Brodie Howard adds depth with a 3.87 ERA.

Caston's batting lineup has been formidable as well, featuring key players such as center fielder Logan Mollenkopf (.388 average, 37 runs) and senior catcher Gavin Mollenkopf (.451 average, 39 runs).
