Concerns Arise Over Colts’ Daniel Jones and Future Prospects

Fans of the Indianapolis Colts are beginning to question the wisdom of the team's decision to extend quarterback Daniel Jones' contract, reminiscent of the New York Giants' earlier misstep. In 2023, the Giants awarded the now 29-year-old quarterback a hefty four-year, $160 million deal, only to part ways with him after two seasons due to underwhelming performances.

However, Jones had a notable resurgence last year with the Colts, achieving his best NFL statistics to date: he passed for 3,101 yards, threw 19 touchdowns, and recorded eight interceptions, resulting in a career-high passer rating of 100.2. This performance earned him a lucrative two-year extension worth $88 million, with $60 million guaranteed.

Despite his previous success, skepticism remains regarding Jones' long-term viability in Indianapolis. Kristopher Knox from Bleacher Report recently included Jones in a list of quarterbacks who might face the bench next season. “If [Jones] and the Colts struggle, however, there’s a real chance that GM Chris Ballard and head coach Shane Steichen will both be on the hot seat,” Knox stated. He emphasized the need for Jones to replicate his 2025 performance, especially after recovering from a ruptured Achilles.

The situation is further complicated by changes to Jones' supporting cast. Key player Michael Pittman Jr. was traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers, and starting right tackle Braden Smith moved to the Houston Texans. Additionally, the presence of former No. 4 overall pick Anthony Richardson adds pressure; should Jones falter, calls for Richardson to take over could intensify. As history shows, the backup quarterback often becomes the most popular player on the team.
