Concerns Grow for Spencer Strider as Elbow Injury Escalates
The Atlanta Braves are reeling from a challenging road trip, managing to secure only one victory. However, the most pressing issues stem from injuries to key players Ronald Acuña Jr. and Spencer Strider, with Strider's condition raising particular alarm.
Strider has been diagnosed with inflammation in his throwing elbow and has been placed on the 15-day injured list. In a roster move to fill the gap, right-hander Anthony Molina has been called up from Triple-A. This decision came just a day after Strider exited the game in the fourth inning during a 7-5 defeat to the New York Mets, as reported by MLB Trade Rumors’ Mark Polishuk.
On Saturday, there were no updates regarding Strider’s status, but Braves manager Walt Weiss announced on Sunday that Strider would visit a specialist. “Nothing definitive yet” has been determined, Weiss stated, indicating that Strider will be assessed by Dr. Keith Meister later this week, according to AJC’s Chad Bishop.
Consulting another physician for elbow problems is rarely a good sign, especially for a pitcher who has faced arm issues in the past. Dr. Meister is well-known for performing numerous elbow surgeries on major league players, raising concerns about the seriousness of Strider's situation. As Battery Power’s Scott Coleman noted, “If you go to Dr. Keith Meister's website, he has a carousel of news articles highlighting all the elbow surgeries he's done on prominent big leaguers. So yeah, it's probably not good.”
The uncertainty surrounding Strider's return this season poses a significant challenge for both him and the Braves. With the team struggling to maintain the health of its ace over recent seasons, this latest injury has reignited fears about their pitching rotation. Given the current circumstances, Atlanta may need to explore acquiring additional starting pitching options as the trade deadline approaches, especially with Strider’s future in question.
